About
COMPLEXion of Change is a storytelling‑driven initiative that brings together global policy leaders, filmmakers, scientists, and youth voices to confront one of the most persistent yet overlooked injustices of our time- colorism and the toxic beauty practices that sustain it. Through the documentary COMPLEXion by filmmaker and activist Nina Davuluri, the first Miss America of South Asian origin, audiences are invited into the human stories behind skin‑lightening practices: stories shaped by identity, discrimination, and the harmful belief that lighter skin is more desirable. More than a film screening, this evening offers a space for honest conversation and reflection connecting personal narratives to the global challenge of mercury-added cosmetics, their health risks, and their environmental impact.
Circular Innovation Lab plays a central role in shaping this dialogue. The event will be moderated by our COO, Arpit Bhutani, who will guide a thoughtful, inclusive conversation between youth representatives, global policy leaders, and advocates like Monika Stankiewicz. His facilitation helps illuminate how science‑policy interfaces, the Minamata Convention, and behavioural insights intersect with lived experiences of colorism and the push for healthier, more inclusive beauty ideals. The evening will close with remarks from Ammaarah Martinus, Behavioural Science Expert at WHO, grounding the discussion in evidence‑based approaches to shifting harmful norms and advancing a future that celebrates every shade while championing mercury‑free, empowering choices.
