About the event

Launched in November 2019, the Basel Convention Plastic Waste Partnership was established to improve and promote the environmentally sound management of plastic waste at the global, regional and national levels and prevent and minimize their generation.

The Forum on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for Plastic Wastes was organized to promote action and dialogue among all the stakeholders involved in such systems while highlighting the linkages to work under the Basel Convention. The Forum explores diverse aspects of setting up and implementing EPR schemes affecting plastic waste management in key sectors and how such schemes function to promote the environmentally sound collection, logistics and processing of plastic waste.

This first Forum event introduced the activities of EPR under the Basel Convention and the key elements and design of EPR schemes. It further consisted of a panel of speakers who discussed EPR systems in different sectors - including packaging, textile, Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE), and vehicles - and their related challenges and successes. Among the panel, Johannes Kaldalu, Circular Economy Researcher at the Circular Innovation Lab, presented the findings within the vehicles sector from the "Study on items shipped for reuse and Extended Producer Responsibility fees: A case for extending EU EPR fees to cover end-of-life activities of products shipped outside the EU" conducted by the Circular Innovation Lab.
