About
This event will explore how gender equality, environmental sustainability, and social inclusion intersect through two case studies led by UNEP and UNIDO. The discussion will focus on innovative solutions that address harmful industry practices while creating opportunities for more inclusive and sustainable systems.
The UNEP segment, moderated by our CEO, Apoorva Arya, will examine the issue of mercury in skin-lightening products. These products pose serious risks to human health and the environment and are tied to harmful beauty standards, discrimination, and social inequality. The session will highlight ways to reduce both the use and demand for toxic cosmetics while promoting healthier, more inclusive approaches to beauty and wellbeing.
The Circular Innovation Lab will play a key role in shaping the discussion on systems change, circular solutions, and inclusive innovation. The session will also showcase practical examples and partnerships that support long-term, gender-responsive solutions.
Key discussion points include:
-
How addressing toxic cosmetics can support gender equality and social inclusion
-
The health and environmental impacts of harmful cosmetic products
-
The role of beauty standards and social norms in driving demand
-
Innovative and community-led solutions to reduce harmful products
-
Partnerships and policies needed to scale sustainable change
The audience includes policymakers, civil society organizations, youth, researchers, development partners, and investors working across environment, health, gender equality, and human rights.
