About the event

Sophia Vlieger de Oliveira, Circular Economy Associate at Circular Innovation Lab, participated as a panellist in this Knowledge Session on 'Plastics & Trade' hosted by the World Economic Forum's Global Plastic Action Partnership Initiative. The session shared Indian and global perspectives on the topic and discussed the importance of a global plastics trade policy.

Companies are increasingly responding to the plastic pollution crisis by creating alternative packaging and redesigning materials, setting recycling targets, upgrading waste management systems etc. Production and consumption patterns are global, including for plastics, as plastics trade accounts for 5% of global trade, even excluding embedded plastics in packaging. Plastic action thus needs to take place across sectors and value chains. Trade policy is a comprehensive tool to achieve cross-sectoral impact and scale.
